Our Library’s 52^nd Birthday

Each year we celebrate our wonderful library with a birthday party that includes fun entertainment provided by various classes, opening gifts from students, and all delighting in delicious cupcakes. In two weeks, on Thursday, February 9^th, our Library will be celebrating its 52^nd birthday.

If you would like to send a gift to the birthday party, a library wish list is on the back of this sheet. Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls has again agreed to have a special display of books from the Wish List plus some great paperbacks. If you opt instead to give a book from your child’s bookshelf, please check that the book is in mint condition and that we do not have a copy in the library. While all thoughtfully selected gifts are greatly appreciated, our growing library no longer has room for duplicate or worn copies of books.

Bakers…once again, if you would be willing to contribute a dozen cupcakes for the birthday party, please let me know. We estimate that we will need eleven dozen.

At TGS we are fortunate to have a library that receives support from so many. Parents generously volunteer in the library, encourage students to use the library regularly, participate in the book fair, read with their children during the March Reading Challenge, and contribute to the library through gifts and donations. As always, we are grateful for your support.

The library birthday party is an enjoyable event for everyone. If you would be willing to bake a dozen cupcakes or if you have any questions, please contact me at school, home (869-1467), or by email.

January in the Library

The library has been active this winter. Kindergarten, first, second, and fourth grades are beginning the Red Clover Award Program. During this period, the elements of story, design and illustration are discussed. We begin by reading different versions of the Grimm's tale, Little Red Riding Hood. Retellings from James Marshall, Melissa Sweet, and Ed Young are compared. After listening to each story, students judge the illustrations, the story, and how well the illustrations helped to tell the story, and then voted for their favorite. Now we are in the process of reading and discussing the ten books nominated for the Red Clover Award. A special activity paired with each book follows. And, please don't spoil the fun for your children by reading the books to them before we do in the library. Seventh grade has begun a winter Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award unit with me. After a presentation of the books, students chose one. Each student will read a book and create a persuasive advertisement aimed at selling it to their peers. The sixth grade also is reading DCF books in a longer program with Tara. For more information on the DCF Award, please click on the link located in the lower left corner of this page. We've been busy in the library.

This was a busy fall in the library. Grades 1 and 2 had sleepovers in the library in November. Second graders and parents slept over night on November 5th and were treated to raucous activities in the gym with Linda Kosiba, a magical art project from William Chambers, and a memorable story reading and storytelling with Eve McDermott. Later everyone camped out on the library floor in their sleeping bags and awoke to bagels. Two weeks later, first graders had their sleepover in the library. Before bedding down in their sleeping bags, they played games with Paul Hopkins in the gym, created nighttime landscapes with Emily Weinberg, and listened to bedtime stories read by Tracy Rodriguez. The next morning first graders read stories to each other while the parents visited over coffee. Everyone left tired, but happy. Thanks to Julie and Ken Burns and second grade parents spearheaded by Kimona Alin for making these events possible.
November also saw Maasai activities in the library. Emily, Eve, and Ponnie did beading and design projects with students and their buddies. Each student left with a beaded bracelet and painted hands in the design style of the Maasai.
And before Thanksgiving, buddies filled baskets with food donated by TGS families and created notes of well wishing for the Putney Food Shelf.

Book Fair

Library Book Fair

Please set aside a time to visit and select from the exciting books that will be on display. If you have not seen our Book Fair in the past, the variety and number of items available will amaze you. Shopping at the Book Fair is a great way to find gifts for the holidays and birthdays, trip entertainment, and fun reading for your children and you. Students will have an opportunity to visit the Book Fair to make their own selections or wish lists.

The Book Fair is also an opportunity to donate books to your child’s class. Teachers will submit a wish list of books that will enrich their classroom libraries. Gift certificates for teachers to redeem at the fair will be available. Each donated book will be recognized with a bookplate identifying your child or family as the donor.

Mark your calendar and stop by the Book Fair during one of these times: Thursday, October 13th; Friday afternoon, October 14th; at the Medieval Faire; Monday, October 17th, and the mornings of Tuesday and Wednesday, October 18th and 19th.

September in the Library

September has been a busy month in the library. By now most students have visited the library and left with books in their hands. New students have come for the first time while returning students have easily found old favorite and exciting new books. Please encourage you children to come to the library, check out books, and ask for help when they need it. We have a great selection for everyone from preschool through 8th grade and new books will be added throughout the year. Parents are also invited to stop in and peruse our parent shelf.

Summer Reading Lists

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the suggested summer reading lists for students entering grades 2-8 in the fall. If you need a paper copy, please let me know. Be sure to read the teacher’s introduction at the beginning of the list. Teacher expectations for each grade differ. And parents, our popular recommended reading list

for adults is here too.

Summer reading provides wonderful entertainment for travel and quiet times, as well as a terrific opportunity to maintain reading proficiency. Set aside a special time or place for reading, make it fun, and remember that modeling reading is a sure way to show your child that your family values and enjoys

reading. Make regular visits to your public library a fun part of your summer.

Wednesday, September 15th marked the opening of the new TGS Library. The entire school gathered for all school meeting in the library to celebrate and have a student led tour of our new space. Please stop in to see our cozy new library!
